Modular fibre optic light ceiling kit

Fibre optic star ceiling kit with hydra cables and ceiling tiles

The modular fibre optic light ceiling kit simplifies the starlight ceiling installation process so you don’t have to deal with hundreds or thousands of long optical fibres. The modular kit is ideal for large-scale fibre optic star ceiling projects, such as home cinema rooms, nightclubs and bars. With this easy to install kit, you can create impressive starry sky ceilings.

Our modular fibre optic lighting kit is made-to-order, so please allow 4-5 weeks for delivery!

The modular DIY kit includes the following components:

What is the Modular fibre optic light ceiling kit?

The Modular kit was developed to simplify the fibre optic star ceiling installation process. Instead of dealing with hundreds of thousands of individual fibres, the conventional fibre optic bundle’s components are broken up into three elements:

Hydra cables

The hydra connector attaches to the light engine’s connector port and the tails connect to the extension cables. The hydra connector tails are covered with black PVC and end in a male connector.

Our light engines come with various port diameters (18 mm, 20 mm, 29 mm, 30 mm), therefore we have developed a compatible hydra connector for each diameter. The larger the port diameter, the higher number of star points can be achieved (we usually recommend 50 - 100 fibres per square meter).

  • 18 mm port connector: 23 connector tails (maximum number of star points: 437)

  • 20 mm port connector: 28 connector tails (maximum number of star points: 532)

  • 29 mm port connector: 55 connector tails (maximum number of star points: 1,045)

  • 30 mm port connector: 65 connector tails (maximum number of star points: 1,235)

Once you know the number of star points you need for your ceiling, you can select the compatible light engine. If your project requires more star points, you can opt for light engines from our DMX range that allows you to connect multiple light engines for synchronised operation.

Extension cable

The extension cable connects the hydra connector ports’ tails to the end cables or fibre optic star ceiling tiles. These cables come in various lengths (1 m, 2 m, 3 m, 5 m, 7 m, 10 m) as the further your star points are from the light engine, the longer extension cables you’ll require. The extension cables come with one male and one female connector. The rubber tubes included with the kit help to secure the connection between cables.

End cable

The end cables connect to the extension cables with a female connector. The end cables are 0.7 m long of which 0.2 m is covered with black PVC.

The cable has 19 optical fibre endpoints with 0.75 mm diameter fibres

Star ceiling tile

The tiles are made of sound-absorbent polyester material. They are lightweight, easy to handle and cut to size. The tiles are 595 mm x 595 mm x 9 mm in size to fit inside a standard 600 mm x 600 mm suspended ceiling tee bar frame.

The tiles have 19 optical fibre endpoints with 0.75 mm diameter fibres:

Installation

The installation process depends on whether you’re using the end cables or ceiling tiles.

End cables

The end cables can be installed similarly to our standard fibre optic lighting kits. The optical fibres can be installed on ceilings made of gypsum plasterboard, wood, perspex and stretch ceilings or alternatively, into ceiling tiles of your choice.  Using appropriately sized drill bits (1 mm & 1.5 mm), you can make holes for your optical fibres in the layout of your choice, whether that's randomly distributed or in an ordered pattern.

You can learn more about the installation process in this YouTube video and in our blog post “How to make a star ceiling”, our installation guide and video.

Ceiling tiles

The ceiling tiles can be installed in three different ways:

  • Drop-in tiles with a suspended tee bar grid

  • Secured to a metallic grid with magnets

  • Nailed to a wooden frame structure

The ceiling tiles can be cut easily to accommodate ceiling features, such as spotlights, ceiling lamps, speakers and smoke detectors.
